Better teaching and learning, built together

We work with researchers, developers, SEND specialists and schools to make Lessonsmith more effective for every learner, especially those who need the most support.

Ways to work with us

Whatever your expertise, there's a way to help shape tools that teachers and students use every day.

Research partnerships

Universities, research schools and education researchers: co-design studies, pilot new approaches in real classrooms and test what improves outcomes, building on EEF evidence and cognitive science.

  • Classroom pilots and evaluation
  • Anonymised, consented data only
  • Findings shared with the profession

SEND and inclusion specialists

SENCOs, specialist schools, educational psychologists, speech and language therapists and charities: help us make every resource more accessible for students with special educational needs and those learning English.

  • Shape our SEND and EAL tools
  • Review adaptations and scaffolds
  • Accessibility and readability testing

Developers and EdTech

Product teams and developers: explore integrations with the platforms schools already use, such as learning platforms, MIS and assistive technology, so resources reach students wherever they learn.

  • Integration and co-development projects
  • Assistive tech, like text-to-speech and reading tools
  • Shared product feedback and roadmaps

Schools, trusts and local authorities

Join as a pilot or design partner. Tell us what your teachers and students need, try new features early and help us build tools that fit how your school really works.

The SEND Suite: a trial for special schools

Special schools told us the same things again and again: progress for pupils with severe and complex needs is hard to see, and timetables fall apart when staff are absent. The SEND Suite is our experiment to help. It's a research and development tool, not yet a product: we're inviting schools and organisations to try it and help us shape it.

πŸͺ™ It opens only with a trial Smith Coin that we issue to you. Read about it and watch the demo here, then request your coins.

1 What's inside

Pupil progress

Record the five areas of the Engagement Model in the moment, as positive progress or maintenance. Time key skills each day and see them on a celeration chart, so you can tell within days, not terms, when the teaching needs to change.

Timetabling and cover

Plan each block by pathway and need. Report an absence and the cover is re-planned: Pathway 3 is protected first, internal staff and the flex pool before anyone else, and agency only as a last resort.

Staff hub and SLT dashboard

Short evaluative reflections and absence reporting for staff. For leaders: deployment and support density, live progress trends, plateau alerts, and CSV and print exports for governors.

SEND CPD

Short sessions that go with the tools: precision teaching, the Engagement Model, the coaching conversation, deploying TAs well and resilient timetables. More SEND CPD is in the Lessonsmith package.

3 Trial Smith Coins

Each member of staff in a trial gets their own coin. The type of coin depends on how many staff will use the Suite:

Trials last 1, 2, 4 or 8 weeks, depending on what you'd like to test and how long you need.

  • πŸ” Your records live on your coin. Each coin is a picture file you keep. Your records are saved inside it, encrypted. They're never stored on our servers.
  • ↩️ Carry on where you left off. Open the Suite with your coin to pick up your records and keep going.
  • πŸ‘₯ Bring the team together. A lead can combine colleagues' coins on the SLT dashboard.
  • πŸ—‘ Deleted at the end of the trial. When the trial ends we destroy its key, so the records on every coin can no longer be opened by anyone, including us. Export what you need before then.
  • πŸ™ˆ Pupil codes or initials only, never names.

4 How to get your coins

  1. Request a trial below: how many staff, and for how many weeks.
  2. Verify who you are: email a photo of your school or employee ID card, quoting your reference. We delete it as soon as we've checked it.
  3. We authorise your trial and your coins are minted.
  4. Collect your coins here with your reference and pickup key. Only you see the codes: we keep a scrambled version, so you hold your coins, not us.
  5. Open the Suite with a coin, and save it again before you close.

Smith Coins: client-held progress tokens for data-minimised learning on the web

Syed Zaidi, Lessonsmith Ltd Β· ORCID 0009-0004-0800-1646 β†—

How can pupils keep their progress on a learning website without an account, a name or an email address? This paper sets out Smith Coins: progress the pupil carries away as a short code or a coin picture, so the server never needs to know who they are. It reviews the research and patents around the idea, and reports the working test in our Experiments, AI Labs and the SEND Suite, mapped against UK GDPR and the Children's Code.

πŸͺ™ For EdTech, publishers and platforms

Use Smith Coins in your own service

Smith Coins let learners save and resume progress with no account, no name and no email: just a short code or a coin picture they keep. If you run a learning app, a game, a platform or a training service and want progress without collecting personal data, you can test Smith Coins with us and then license them for your product.

1 Ways to work with us

Test and trial

Try Smith Coins before you commit.

  • A free evaluation for an agreed period, usually 30 to 90 days
  • A test build and guidance to try it with your own content
  • A call with us to plan your trial and review the results

πŸ”Ž Check a licence

Every organisation licensed to use Smith Coins has a reference starting SCL-, often shown on a badge on their website. Enter it to check that it's genuine and still active.

πŸ’‘ Good to know

  • The idea behind Smith Coins is described openly in our research paper. A licence covers our software, coin designs, the Smith Coins name, updates and support, which Lessonsmith Ltd owns.
  • Smith Coins are built for data minimisation (UK GDPR and the Children's Code), but you remain responsible for your own service's data protection.
  • Coins can't be faked. A verified Smith Coin carries a certificate signed by Lessonsmith, issued only after our server has checked the work saved in the coin. Change one character and it fails. Anyone can check a coin on our Experiments page, and licensees can check certificates themselves with our public key.
  • Not ready to trial yet? Try Smith Coins on our Experiments page, free and with no account.

Mimic: A Personalised AI and Soft-Robotic Wearable for Facial Paralysis Rehabilitation and Functional Facial Reanimation

πŸ”¬ Founder's research Β· Concept paper

Mimic: AI and soft robotics for facial paralysis

Syed Mujtaba Zaidi, Emanations Ltd Β· ORCID 0009-0004-0800-1646 β†—

Facial paralysis can affect expression, eating, speech and confidence. Mimic is a pre-clinical engineering concept for a personalised wearable: it reads muscle signals (sEMG) and facial movement on camera, learns each person's own patterns, and guides soft actuators through an independent safety layer. The first prototype works only on an artificial face and eyebrow. It's a research proposal, not a clinically validated medical device.
